1. Does the aproximately $45,000 quoted as the cost of the program include the cost of the Private Pilot Licence?

Yes, the approximately $45,000 includes all flying, groundschool, examinations, books and materials. The amount is realistic and is based on average costs.

 

2. Will student loans cover the entire cost of the program?

The CanSask student loan plan will help towards covering the tuition costs of the program. Please see CanSask for more details. Check with you banking institute on student financing as well.

 

3. Do I have to pay my fees and buy my books on the first day of classes?

Student fees are due first day of classes, please check with SIAST registration for deadlines. You will require all books and materials on entry to the college program.

 

4. What are the medical requirements?

Admission requirments to the Commercial Pilot Program require that you have a category 1 medical exam performed by an approved Transport Canada medical examiner. Your local flying school can provide a list of approved examiners in your area, as well as the Transport Canada website.

 

5. Can I wear glasses and be a commercial pilot?

Many commercial pilots wear glasses, or have undergone laser surgery. Consult your Transport Canada Medical Examiner.

 

6. How many hours will I spend in class every day?

Classes operate from 0800-1200, and 1300-1500 Monday to Friday.

 

7. Does the program have a dress code?

Yes! You will dress like a professional pilot: white uniform shirt with black tie, black trousers, black belt, black dress shoes. Students take pride in being recognized as future professional commercial pilots.

 

8. What are my prospects for obtaining employment in the industry after completion of the course?

Many graduates are hired after completion of the course. Most will start out working for a small operator such as Transwest Air or West Wind Aviation. In a lot of instances graduates will spend 6 - 12 months working on the docks, on the ramp, grooming or loading aircraft, etc. before being assigned a flying position within a company. There have recently been some hirings of first officers straight out of the program on to aircraft such as a Beech 1900 or King Air.
